VIOS (Virtual I/O Server)

The Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) is software, part of the PowerVM Editions hardware feature, that shares the physical I/O resources of an IBM Power server among its client partitions. It runs in its own dedicated partition and provides virtual SCSI targets, virtual Fibre Channel through NPIV and the Shared Ethernet Adapter.

How XorMon monitors it

✓XorMon monitors VIOS as one of the operating systems of an IBM Power server, next to AIX, IBM i and Linux on Power.
✓The HMC provides basic CPU usage and memory allocation. An OS agent in each AIX or VIOS LPAR adds metrics that are available only from the operating system: CPU sys, user and IO wait, memory, paging, FC and vSCSI adapter latency, filesystem usage, the errpt error log, LVM and disk multipath.
✓Adapter graphs cover FC, Ethernet, SEA, vSCSI, SAS and SR-IOV adapters, per server and in total.
✓When VIOS data is not collected through the REST API because the VIOS does not communicate with the HMC, the XorMon documentation lists checks, such as making sure the perfprovider service is started.
