Capacity planning is the process of predicting the resources a workload needs to meet its performance targets: CPU, memory, storage and network bandwidth. It aims to avoid under-provisioning, which creates bottlenecks, and over-provisioning, which wastes money. It starts from historical data, forecasts demand with trend analysis or predictive models, then sizes the resources.
